Support Request: SiteKiosk Freezes After Extended Inactivity

Description

Hello,

We are using SiteKiosk 9.7.5026 on Windows 10. We are displaying a simple HTML and JavaScript UI which uses SiteKiosk.ExternalApps.Run to launch applications when the user clicks buttons. The device is not connected to a network.

After an extended period of inactivity, between 12 and 24 hours, the SiteKiosk browser will freeze. CPU usage of SiteKiosk.exe goes to 40% (most likely 80% of one core). The mouse will still move but mousing over or clicking buttons and links will have no effect. Eventually the machine must be shut down either by pressing the power button or by using Ctrl-Alt-Delete and choosing shut down (SiteKiosk blocking of system critical key combinations and system critical windows has been disabled for troubleshooting purposes). Either way the SiteKiosk logs show "abnormal sitekiosk program termination".

We did not have this problem before upgrading to SiteKiosk 9.7.5026 and switching to Windows 10.

I've checked the total virtual memory usage at the time of the freeze and it is 2.3GB out of 8GB, and has not changed much since shortly after powerup. So I don't think that the problem is caused by a memory leak.

We have set the watchdog timeouts in the SiteKiosk config file to 20s each. The watchdog does not seem to detect that the browser has frozen. It does not reset the browser.

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. Version 9.7 is out of support. If on another computer, you could test the newest version (no license required, however to keep that version, your license will need to be less than 1 year old.) You should also increase your watchdog timers to a more stable number up to 60 sec. Also you have screensaver and daily restart turned off. These features help to maintain the stability of the SiteKiosk browser on the Windows system, see Section 1 - https://www.provisio.com/helpconsole/SiteKiosk%20Help/en-US/manuell_editierbare_optionen.htm . The freezing may not have been caused by SiteKiosk at all, you will need to check for any domain policies or any other services that need to run, causing the freezing.

If you cannot find the cause of the freezing, please review your logs and send your files to support-america(at)provisio.com, referencing this post:

-Confirmation that the newest version was tested.
-A zip file of SiteKioskNG.log - C:\Users\<your running user>\AppData\Local\Temp (generates when SiteKiosk runs.)
-Windows Event Viewer logs (Application and System) for SiteKiosk or any other windows related process at the time of restart.
-A Screenshot of installed Windows programs.

Best regards,
Andre.
